  3. I seriously doubt if dowry is still there :-) I second the thoughts of the anonymous friend who commented first..

Dowry system came to existence like this..

During gurukulam system of education, guys went to their master's home and lived with him.. So when they finally came out of master's home they are penniless.. Those days guys got married as soon as they get graduated.. So the bride's father pitying the situation of the groom (worried about his daughter's life !!!) gave money, assets, gold, whatever he could afford..

People have blindly followed it and thus the irrational dowry system is still in existence..

I always sympathy those brides' parents who lose their daughters and also their life long savings..

In my opinion DOWRY is simply IDIOTIC unless an illiterate gal is married to a graduate..

dowry is idiotic and i would say even barbaric even if the girl is married to a person who is not a graduate :)

  5. @ Suriyah : i agree.. as long as the girl is given something which she expects from her parents on her wedding, it is very perfect.. But dowry seen as a factor for wedding is all ugly.. Nothing should be demanded at all..
